In response to a tweet suggesting that a Twitter video app is needed, Musk replied "It's coming".

  The Chinese video-sharing platform is the only app not owned by Facebook to make the global top five of downloads. In its home country, TikTok's owner ByteDance also holds the top spot with the Chinese language video app Douyin. TikTok's continued popularity emerged even after former US President Donald Trump tried to ban it in America.

Blockchain site Poly Network said hackers had exploited a vulnerability in its system and taken thousands of digital tokens such as Ether. In a letter posted on Twitter, it urged the thieves to "establish communication and return the hacked assets". In scale, the hack is on par with huge recent breaches at exchanges such as Coincheck and Mt Gox. In its letter Poly Network said: "The amount of money you have hacked is one of the biggest in defi [decentralised finance] history. "Law enforcement in any country will regard this as a major economic crime and you will be pursued. "The money you stole are [sic] from tens of thousands of crypto community members, hence the people." It urged various exchanges to block deposits of the coins, after millions of dollars in tokens were transferred to separate cryptocurrency wallets. About $267m of Ether currency has been taken, $252m of Binance coins and roughly $85 million in USDC tokens. Changpeng Zhao, chief executive of Binance, said his firm was aware of the hack, but added there was only so much he could do. He said the group was "co-ordinating with all our security partners to proactively help". "There are no guarantees," he added. Poly Network is a decentralised finance - or Defi - provider, which allows users to transfer tokens tied to one blockchain to a different network. 'All-time high' Cryptocurrency systems such as Ether and Binance were developed independently, so have struggled to work in conjunction with each other. Losses from fraud in the Defi sector hit an all-time high of $474m in the first seven months of the year, a report from research company CipherTrace said on Tuesday. But losses from crime in the overall cryptocurrency market dropped sharply to $681m, compared to $1.9bn for the whole of 2020 and $4.5bn in 2019. Last week, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Defi lender Blockchain Credit Partners and two of its top executives for raising $30m through allegedly fraudulent offerings.

 At least 22 people, including some children, were killed and 59 wounded when a suicide bomber struck as thousands of fans streamed out of a concert by U.S. singer Ariana Grande in the English city of Manchester on Monday.Prime Minister Theresa May said the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack, making it the deadliest militant assault in Britain since four British Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London's transport system in July 2005.
Police said the attacker detonated the explosives shortly after 10:33 pm (2133 GMT) at Manchester Arena, which has the capacity to hold 21,000 people. Children were among the dead, police said.
"We believe, at this stage, the attack last night was conducted by one man," Manchester Chief Constable Ian Hopkins told reporters. "The priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network.

"We believe the attacker was carrying an improvised explosive device which he detonated causing this atrocity," said Hopkins, who declined to answer questions about whether the attacker was British.
A witness who attended the concert said she felt a huge blast as she was leaving the arena, followed by screaming and a rush by thousands of people trying to escape the building.
A video posted on Twitter showed fans, many of them young, screaming and running from the venue. Dozens of parents frantically searched for their children, posting photos and pleading for information on social media.

Antivirus firm warns of cyberattacks on home appliances

Internet security became a hot topic when a ransomware attack hit more than 300,000 computers worldwide. Avast, the company behind the leading antivirus software, warned Thursday against attacks on home appliances connected to the internet, calling hackers targeting home routers a major threat to consumers.

"It's a trivial thing to do and there's nothing the user can do to fix it, other than to throw the router away and put in a new router," Avast chief executive Vincent Steckler told reporters.

They'd hijacked the bank's computer systems to access an international financial network, SWIFT, which shunts around billions of dollars a day. Samsung rumored to resell Note 7 as 'Fandom Edition' phones

In a move to make lemonade out of lemons, Samsung may sell refurbished editions of its infamous Galaxy Note 7 under a new name: the "Galaxy Note FE," or "Fandom Edition."

As you recall, Samsung ceased production and recalled the Note 7 (twice) after users reported in summer 2016 instances of the phone catching fire. In March of this year, Samsung stated that it will recycle returned Note 7s in an "environmentally friendly way," and listed turning the devices into "refurbished phones or rentals phones" as one of its three core methods. Today, a report from Korean news outlet ETNews said these handsets may be called the Galaxy Note FE, with FE standing for "Fandom Edition."

Verizon outbids AT&T for nationwide “5G” spectrum

Spencer Platt Verizon has outbid AT&T to buy spectrum-holding company Straight Path Communications for $3.1 billion after "an unusually intense bidding war" between the top two wireless carriers in the US, The Wall Street Journalreported today.
AT&T announced its own $1.6 billion acquisition of the company on April 10, saying that Straight Path "holds a nationwide portfolio of millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum, including 39GHz and 28GHz licenses," and that this spectrum will support development of AT&T's 5G wireless network. Straight Path's 735 licenses in the 39GHz band and 133 licenses in the 28GHz band "cover the entire United States, including all of the top 40 markets," AT&T said last month.
