cellular connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT) finally got
going. Nowadays not a week goes by without a new announcement of a new
4G NB-IoT / LTE-M network rollout. Yet the future for industry is
already racing towards the fifth generation (5G) of wireless
communication technology.</p>
<p>5G promises lightning-fast speed, barely noticeable latency (or
communication response time) and vastly increased capacity. All four
major U.S. carriers have green-lighted test networks and partial
implementations in some cities.</p>
<p>The benefits of marrying the physical world with digital technologies
have been discussed for what seems like a generation. Many industries
could use the intelligence gleaned from connected systems to gain
critical insights about their operations and how to make improvements
that will make a genuine difference to their bottom line. While 4G is
already creating dramatic improvements for industries around the world,
it’s 5G that’s creating the greater buzz.</p>
<h2>Data alone is not enough<span><a name='more'></a></span></h2>
<p>Jani Vilenius, Director of Research and Technology at Sandvik, says
that data is already driving industry around the world: “Everyone is
already collecting, and to a certain extent using data. But improved
connectivity is needed to truly utilize the data and add business value.
When we add more Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and
voice/image recognition into everyday systems, the bandwidth
requirements mean 5G is inevitable to leverage the new capabilities.”</p>
<p>Industry 4.0 was supposed to bring about these benefits, but up until
now there’s been a crucial element missing. Turning the idea of a
collaborative, adaptive, real-time industrial digital system into a
reality needs a truly agile communications infrastructure.</p>
<h2>Beyond incremental improvement</h2>
<p>You can be forgiven for thinking the move from 4G to 5G is merely
about incremental speed improvements, with little need for all the hype.
After all, the 4G/LTE (Long Term Evolution) communications architecture
of today has hooked up approximately 3 billion mobile devices.</p>
<p>But in truth, the difference between 4G and 5G is not like comparing
one iPhone model with the next, it’s more like comparing a horse and
buggy to an electric race car.</p>
<p>Yes, 3G and 4G technology is most often equated with smartphones.
That’s because the systems were designed for voice and mobile data
respectively. And while it’s true that 5G’s dramatic speed increases
will mean so much more than just higher-quality streaming and lightning
quick downloads, the fact that it’s been designed from the ground up for
data connectivity will be the game changer.</p>
<p>Faster connectivity and low-to-no latency will unlock operational
benefits in every industry on the planet. Up until now there has been
only talk, but with test systems now in place, those operational
benefits are becoming clear.</p>
<h2>Taking the connected factory to the next level</h2>
<p>In a market reliant on data-intensive machine applications, the
higher speeds and low latency of 5G is required for the effective use of
autonomous robotics technology, wearables and virtual reality.</p>
<p>Unlike previous jumps in levels of technology in industry, 5G won’t
fundamentally redesign the production line. But what it will do is offer
manufacturers an opportunity to build smart factories that can adapt to
changing market conditions.</p>
<p>The increasing capabilities of smart devices and the factories that
make them won’t just impact competition within a set industry. As
competition shifts from product-based to system-based, formerly clear
industry boundaries will be blurred. Traditional manufacturing companies
may soon find they are competing as part of a much broader automation
industry, for example.</p>
<h2>Healthcare: Enabling remote surgery</h2>
<p>The low latency of 5G is set to revolutionize the healthcare
industry, most notably in the operating theater. Experienced surgeons
can advise more junior colleagues via a video connection or could even
operate the surgical device remotely. You could be forgiven for thinking
this sounds unlikely, yet it’s already happened.</p>
<p>In early 2019, the world’s first live surgery via remote assistance
took place successfully in China. An experienced surgeon inserted a
stimulation device in the brain of a Parkinson's patient. The almost
instantaneous latency of 2 milliseconds allowed the surgeon to
accurately conduct the procedure as if they were right next to the
patient, whereas in fact they were 3,000 kilometers away. The latency
resembles surgery using a traditional cabled monitor solution.</p>
<h2>Autonomous technology on the road and underground</h2>
<p>The improvements to network latency will give applications and
devices the ability to communicate in close-to real-time. This should
ease the safety concerns of autonomous vehicles, providing them the
ability to constantly communicate with the ever-changing environment
around them.</p>
<p>This of course will have significant impact on mining operations,
something Sandvik is aware of. Already, Sandvik has signed an agreement
with Nokia to further develop solutions based on private LTE and 5G
technology, much of which will take place at the Sandvik test mine in
Tampere, Finland.</p>
<p>“Our focus to date has been on private LTE technology, which offers
speed, latency, reliability and privacy benefits over Wi-Fi. It’s one of
the technologies our customers are asking for now,” explains Vilenius.
The benefit to Sandvik in focusing on LTE is simple. (LTE stands for
Long-term Evolution and isn’t as much a technology as it is the path
followed to achieve 4G speeds). <span class="caption right" style="max-width: 200px;"><em></em></span></p>
<blockquote>
<p>Improved connectivity is needed to truly utilize the data and add business value</p>
</blockquote>
<p>That’s because 5G will be used to augment and enhance existing LTE
networks rather than replace them. Even so, telecommunications companies
are facing a substantial investment. But rather than holding back the
rollout, that very fact could speed things up.</p>
<p>Management consulting firm McKinsey & Company believes that the
trend of network sharing will accelerate, decreasing what would
otherwise be a daunting cost of 5G implementation. Network sharing
enables operators to reduce the total cost of ownership while improving
network quality by sharing both active and passive equipment.
“Simulations from one case showed that by sharing 5G small-cell
deployment and building a common, nationwide 5G IoT macro layer,
operators could reduce 5G-related investments by more than 40 percent,”
said a spokesperson.</p>
<h2>Researching the business models of the future</h2>
<p>In addition to the Sandvik test mine, Finland is also the home for
significant research. Aalto University’s Industrial Internet Campus is a
cross-disciplinary platform that provides a testbed for future
solutions for industrial partners including Sandvik’s partner Nokia.</p>
<p>Project areas include intelligent construction sites, energy usage
optimization in smart buildings, and the factory of the future. The 5G
meets Industrial Internet (5G@II) project looks at how to provide a
cost-effective, globally secure and secure foundation for a future
5G-driven industrial internet. Specifically, the team aims to create a
blueprint of a 5G service management system by trialing it on real
industrial use cases.</p><p> </p><p> <span class="caption right" style="max-width: 200px;"><em>Jani Vilenius, Director of Research and Technology at Sandvik</em></span></p>Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-76885139345521612122021-08-11T05:15:00.001+01:002021-08-11T05:15:35.148+01:00TikTok named as the most downloaded app of 2020<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1058D/production/_119875966_tiktikreuters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="450" data-original-width="800" height="170" src="https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/976/cpsprodpb/1058D/production/_119875966_tiktikreuters.jpg" width="287" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p> TikTok and Facebook apps on smartphone screenimage sourceReuters
TikTok was the world's most downloaded app in 2020 as it took the top spot from Facebook Messenger, according to digital analytics company App Annie.</p><p> The Chinese video-sharing platform is the only app not owned by Facebook to make the global top five of downloads.
In its home country, TikTok's owner ByteDance also holds the top spot with the Chinese language video app Douyin.
TikTok's continued popularity emerged even after former US President Donald Trump tried to ban it in America. <span></span></p><a name='more'></a><p></p><p>Facebook-owned apps have held the top spot since the survey started in 2018 and the company still dominated the chart.
Mark Zuckerberg's social media giant accounted for the rest of the top five with Facebook's flagship app as well as WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger all making an appearance.
Last year, then-President Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban new downloads of the TikTok app in the US.
The Trump administration claimed that TikTok posed a national security risk as the Chinese government had access to its user data. </p><p>The company repeatedly denied the allegations.

A potential deal to resolve the issue that would have seen parent company ByteDance selling part of its US business to US technology giant Oracle and retailer Walmart was given the tentative green light from Mr Trump but was never approved by the Chinese government.
Since becoming US President in January this year Joe Biden has withdrawn Mr Trump's executive order.
As well as seeing off that challenge in the US the company has been exploring new ways to attract users. </p><p> Last week, it emerged that TikTok is trialling a new vanishing clips feature similar to functions on Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram.
TikTok Stories will allow users to see content posted by accounts they follow for 24 hours before they are deleted.
It came after WhatsApp rolled out a feature for users to post photos or videos that vanish after they are seen.</p>Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-92129113575506891352021-08-11T04:50:00.000+01:002021-08-11T04:50:37.986+01:00Hackers have stolen some $600m (£433m) in what appears to be one the largest cryptocurrency heists ever
Blockchain site Poly Network said hackers had exploited a vulnerability in its system and taken thousands of digital tokens such as Ether.
In a letter posted on Twitter, it urged the thieves to "establish communication and return the hacked assets".
In scale, the hack is on par with huge recent breaches at exchanges such as Coincheck and Mt Gox.
In its letter Poly Network said: "The amount of money you have hacked is one of the biggest in defi [decentralised finance] history.
"Law enforcement in any country will regard this as a major economic crime and you will be pursued.
"The money you stole are [sic] from tens of thousands of crypto community members, hence the people."
'We lost our life savings in a cryptocurrency scam'
EU plans to make Bitcoin transfers more traceable
Poly Network said a preliminary investigation found a hacker exploited a "vulnerability between contract calls".
It urged various exchanges to block deposits of the coins, after millions of dollars in tokens were transferred to separate cryptocurrency wallets.
About $267m of Ether currency has been taken, $252m of Binance coins and roughly $85 million in USDC tokens.
Changpeng Zhao, chief executive of Binance, said his firm was aware of the hack, but added there was only so much he could do.
He said the group was "co-ordinating with all our security partners to proactively help".
"There are no guarantees," he added.
Poly Network is a decentralised finance - or Defi - provider, which allows users to transfer tokens tied to one blockchain to a different network.
'All-time high'
Cryptocurrency systems such as Ether and Binance were developed independently, so have struggled to work in conjunction with each other.
Losses from fraud in the Defi sector hit an all-time high of $474m in the first seven months of the year, a report from research company CipherTrace said on Tuesday.
But losses from crime in the overall cryptocurrency market dropped sharply to $681m, compared to $1.9bn for the whole of 2020 and $4.5bn in 2019.
Last week, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) charged Defi lender Blockchain Credit Partners and two of its top executives for raising $30m through allegedly fraudulent offerings. In-depth press reviews for the iPhone X are now live after several <a data-id="59" data-m="{"i":59,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":4}" href="http://www.ibtimes.com/iphone-x-review-roundups-critique-gestures-feature-unboxing-first-looks-watch-2608155" target="_blank"> influencer unboxings</a>
and previews days prior. The consensus is that Apple’s latest endeavor
is a step in the right direction. Some of the largest gripes so far have
been about Apple being <a data-id="60" data-m="{"i":60,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":5}" href="https://daringfireball.net/" target="_blank"> more selective</a>
with how much time certain reviewers got with the device before
opinions were allowed to be published. Still, many pundits have been
fair, noting that while the iPhone X has many stellar qualities, it is
far from perfect. Here’s what is being said.<br />
<h1>
<strong>Mashable </strong></h1>
<a data-id="61" data-m="{"i":61,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":6}" href="http://mashable.com/2017/10/31/apple-iphone-x-review/?utm_cid=mash-com-Tw-main-link#vkupY_pIHaq2" target="_blank">Lance Ulanoff</a>
called the iPhone X “the iPhone you want.” He praises its OLED display
and both cameras on the smartphone. While he noted that the Face ID
facial recognition is effective, he added that the feature is not 100
percent foolproof. Mashable did an experiment with two sets of twins,
who were both able to unlock an iPhone X after their sibling set up Face
ID.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<h1>
<strong>The Verge </strong></h1>
<a data-id="62" data-m="{"i":62,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":7}" href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/31/16579748/apple-iphone-x-review" target="_blank">Nilay Patel</a>
called the iPhone X design the third best after the iPhone 4 and the
original iPhone. This main gripe about the device was the learning curve
in how to hold the iPhone X in order to properly use FaceID.<br />
<h1>
<strong>Business Insider </strong></h1>
<a data-id="63" data-m="{"i":63,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":8}" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/iphone-x-hands-on-photos-first-impressions-2017-10" target="_blank">Steve Kovach</a>
is a fan of the iPhone X design and doesn’t even mind the top notch.
However, he pointed out that third-party apps have issues with screen
optimization.<br />
<h1>

claims the iPhone X “feels like the future” noting that its Face ID
feature and lack of a home button makes it very close to the first
hands-free smartphone. He also noted that while the functionality of
Face ID wasn’t ideal that he didn’t find it any more of an issue than
handing the first generation of Touch ID on the iPhone 5s.<br />

is a fan of the OLED display on the iPhone X, which supports HDR, but
noted that watching video on the device has its challenges. While
viewing in landscape mode video defaults to widescreen and to put the
display to full-screen brings up the notch.<br />
<h1>
<strong>BuzzFeed </strong></h1>
<a data-id="66" data-m="{"i":66,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":11}" href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/nicolenguyen/iphone-x-review?bftw&utm_term=.alWaBDJrv#.cdQW8kRxO" target="_blank">Nicole Nguyen</a>
was a fan of the size of the iPhone X, which is roughly the same as the
iPhone 8 despite having a much larger screen. Her critiques of the
device included the device's less than desirable battery life, software
bugs and a slow handling of Face ID.<br />
<h1>
<strong>Engadget</strong></h1>
<a data-id="67" data-m="{"i":67,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":12}" href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/31/apple-iphone-x-day-1-preview/" target="_blank">Chris Velazco</a>
was impressed by Apple’s first OLED display on the iPhone X, noting
that the colors are more natural than vivid, in comparison to a device
like the Galaxy Note 8. He found some of the gestures that now command
functionality to be slightly slower than using the home button on other
iPhone, switching and closing apps, in particular.<br />

said the iPhone X price and new features are worth it, highlighting the
device’s speed and efficiency. He also took issue with the new app
closing and switching functions. <br />

was satisfied with the accuracy of Face ID, having done tests, which
deliberately failed, such as wearing a mask or goggles with dark lenses.
He noted some challenges in using Apple Pay, which now had an added
step of having to look at a device with Face ID before making a
purchase.<br />

A new smartphone model—from Google, Apple, or another manufacturer—catches your eye, and all of a sudden, your old handset won't cut it. But don't leap into an upgrade without taking precautions. After all, you store a lot of important information on your smartphone, and you don't want to lose any of it during the excitement of a switch.</div>
<div class="field-sir-trevor-body" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: "Segoe UI", "Segoe WP", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 18px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

Luckily, upgrading from one phone to another is a lot easier than it used to be, because we now store most of our digital possessions in the cloud. Plus, you can find some key apps to help you switch from one device to another. Here's what you need to know.</div>
</div>
<div class="st-block markdown text-left " style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Segoe UI Semilight", "Segoe WP Semilight", "Segoe WP", "Segoe UI", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 2.8rem; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.214; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1rem;">

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
Unless you're planning a full digital detox, you're going to want to take everything on your old phone, from browser settings to contacts, along with you. Start by going through the apps on your phone and thinking about where each program stores its data—and how seamlessly you can transfer it to your new device. In some cases you won't need to do anything. For instance, if you're letting Apple or Google manage your emails, contacts, and calendars, then all of that will automatically show up on your new phone as soon as you sign in. Email clients from Yahoo and Microsoft work the same way, storing everything in the cloud rather than on your physical device.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
<span id="652764634" style="box-sizing: border-box; clear: left; float: left; margin: 0.5rem 2.4rem 0px 0px; padding: 0px;">In fact, the built-in backup tools in Android and iOS now let you save almost everything you need to the cloud or to a computer, which wasn't always the case in the past. On Android, head to Settings, then System, then Backup to see that the feature is working properly. On iOS, go to Settings, then tap your Apple ID name, then iCloud. You can also make a backup through iTunes by connecting your iPhone to your computer. Both of these backup tools take care of a lot of your phone's contents, including photos and videos, call history, and browser settings. <div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
That said, we need to flag a couple backup problems—particularly on Android, where backups aren't quite as clear-cut as they are on iOS. For example, while Apple will back up all your SMS and iMessage conversations, Google only does this for Pixel phones. If you're a Samsung fan, you'll need another tool, such as SMS Backup+ or SMS Backup & Restore, to do the job. We've written a full <a data-id="61" data-m="{"i":61,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":6}" href="https://www.popsci.com/how-to-save-your-text-messages?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">guide to backing up text messages</a> to help.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
On top of that, it can be tricky to work out which of your non-Apple or non-Google apps are actually taking advantage of the built-in backup options. Your best bet is to head into these third-party apps and see if they mention backups. If you're still not sure, contact the developer directly. Even if an app doesn't create backups, many of the most popular ones, like Netflix and Spotify, keep everything in the cloud anyway.</div>
</div>
<div class="st-block markdown text-left " style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Segoe UI Semilight", "Segoe WP Semilight", "Segoe WP", "Segoe UI", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 2.8rem; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.214; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1rem;">
Manual backups</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
With so much of your phone's data backed up automatically, transferring it to a new handset is relatively easy. During the setup process for a new Android or iOS device, as soon as you've signed in with your Google account or Apple ID credentials, you'll receive a prompt asking if you want to restore data from a backup.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
So what's left to transfer? As we've mentioned, individual apps might need some attention—particularly your games. Check whether the program lets you save your hard-earned high scores to the cloud or to another device. Some games will take advantage of the automatic backups provided by Google and Apple, but some won't. Again, check with the developer if the game's menus or options don't make its backup status clear.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
The biggest headaches come when you're switching between Android and iOS—perhaps unsurprisingly, Apple and Google both want to make it very hard for you to leave. Your Android backups won't work on your new iPhone, and your iCloud or iTunes backups won't be compatible with your shiny new Android handset. Oh, and you also need to deregister iMessage before you switch from iOS to Android.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
At the same time, Apple and Google are eager to tempt you over to their platform, and have written official guides on making the switch. If you're moving from Android to iOS, consult <a data-id="62" data-m="{"i":62,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":7}" href="https://www.apple.com/iphone/move-to-ios/?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Apple's guide</a>: There's an official Move to iOS app which will move over most of your stuff, including messages and photos. If you're going the other way, look up <a data-id="63" data-m="{"i":63,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":8}" href="https://www.android.com/intl/en_uk/switch/?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">Google's instructions</a>, which bring contacts, calendars, photos, and videos via Google Drive.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
One of your biggest problems will be third-party apps, especially if you're going from Apple phones to Google-powered ones. The only app Apple makes available on Android is Apple Music, so you won't be able to transfer your iTunes library or documents you've made in Pages. Going the other way is much more straightforward, because just about all of Google's apps are available in iOS form, which eases the transition.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
Just work methodically through your apps and make sure anything you absolutely need will be available on your new handset once you wipe your old one. If you can't figure out how to make that happen, a quick web search or an email to the developer (find contact details on the app's store listing) should do the trick.</div>
</div>
<div class="st-block markdown text-left " style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Segoe UI Semilight", "Segoe WP Semilight", "Segoe WP", "Segoe UI", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 2.8rem; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.214; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1rem;">
Subscription accounts</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
Even once you've figured out how you'll move your data from one phone to another, you're not quite ready to roll. Next, you have to think about the accounts you're signed into on your device. Because some services won't work on too many devices, you'll have to deactivate or log out of certain accounts on your old phone before they'll function on your new one.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
This doesn't apply to every service, but it's true for subscription apps like Google Play Music (see Google's instructions <a data-id="64" data-m="{"i":64,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":9}" href="https://support.google.com/googleplaymusic/answer/3139562?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">here</a>) and HBO Go (see HBO's instructions <a data-id="65" data-m="{"i":65,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":10}" href="https://help.hbogo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204334008?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">here</a>). So review the subscription apps on your phone and look up their policies online. Then follow their instructions to set the same apps up on your new phone.</div>
</div>
<div class="st-block markdown text-left " style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<h2 style="box-sizing: border-box; font-family: "Segoe UI Semilight", "Segoe WP Semilight", "Segoe WP", "Segoe UI", Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 2.8rem; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.214; margin: 0px; padding: 0px 0px 1rem;">
Security</h2>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
Once your new phone is set up, consider the security of your old one. You may well use your phone as part of the two-step authentication process, where a code gets sent to your phone whenever someone tries to log on to your accounts on a new device. Most accounts and services, from Facebook to Google, now offer this security feature.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
While two-step authentication improves your security, it also adds to the hassle of switching phones. For accounts that authenticate via SMS message, assuming that you're keeping the same SIM and phone number, you don't need to do anything. But if your accounts authenticate with an authenticator app, you'll need to carefully navigate the switch from one phone to another. To find more details, look on the app's web page—for example, <a data-id="66" data-m="{"i":66,"p":55,"n":"partnerLink","y":24,"o":11}" href="https://support.google.com/accounts/troubleshooter/4430955?dom=prime&src=syn" style="box-sizing: border-box; color: #126d91; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none;" target="_blank">check here</a> for instructions on moving Google's app.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
In some cases, you might have to disable two-step authentication briefly while you move everything over. Still, we'd recommend keeping both phones close to hand until you've securely logged into all your accounts on the new device. For more advice, head to the support section of the app you're using: Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo Mail, and others.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1.9rem; padding: 0px;">
With everything up and running on your new device, you can safely reset the old one—just wait a few days to make sure the switch has been successful. On iPhones, Apple recommends signing out of iCloud first, then heading to Settings, General, and Reset. On Android, you can reset your phone by going to Settings, System, and Reset.</div>

The internet can be a scary place. Misinformation, false promises, and
fake news lurk behind every clickbait headline and questionable link.
Entire industries are built to profit from deceptive tricks to con the
naive.<br />
They say a sucker is born every minute, and online scam
artists are counting on it. Their tricks are built to prey on trust. In
addition to regularly changing the passwords for all of your accounts,
the best way to protect yourself from being swindled is to remain
skeptical and vigilant of anything that seems out of the ordinary.<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
<h2>
<strong>The most common online scams</strong></h2>
<h3>
<strong>1) “There’s a problem with your account!”</strong></h3>
You
get an email from what appears to be PayPal or your bank with a message
along the lines of: “There’s a problem with your account. Click this
link to fix the issue or your account will be suspended.”<br />
Once you
click the link, you’re taken to a page that looks exactly like the
login page to your account. So you enter your information, hit enter,
and then… it doesn’t go through. Maybe just a browser glitch? Probably
not.<br />
What’s likely happened is that you’ve just given your
valuable account information to scammers who now have free reign to do
whatever they please with it.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
This classic phishing scam
successfully tricks millions of people every year. It’s not just banks
or PayPal emails to be wary of; scammers might adopt the guise of
Amazon, Apple, eBay, or one of your co-workers if you work in an
industry where you email might have valuable information.<br />
The main
giveaway that the email is not legit is this: your bank or any similar
service will never, ever, ever ask for your log-in information. If that
happens, that should always raise a red flag.<br />
The other indicators
are in the details. Usually, the sender’s email address will be
suspicious. They may claim to be from Bank of America Security Center
but then their actual email address is something strange like
@bank-of-america.org rather than @<a class="vglnk" data-hl="viglink" href="http://bankofamerica.com/" rel="nofollow"><span>bankofamerica</span><span>.</span><span>com</span></a>.
You may also notice, if you hover the mouse over the link in the email,
that the click-through doesn’t actually go to the website but instead
some other web address.<br />
The best way to investigate their claim is
to open a new browser, type in the web address, and then enter. Odds
are you won’t see any messages indicating there’s any issue with your
account.<br />
<h3>
<strong>2) “Your computer is infected!”</strong></h3>
One
day you’re happily browsing goat GIFs on Imgur when a pop-up appears
and informs you that your system has been compromised. Sometimes it even
looks like it’s from your computer’s operating system. You may even be
unable to exit the window without clicking one of the choices.<br />
It
promises to diagnose your problem with a click, but once you do, the
problem is only compounded. Now there are even more pop-ups. And the
only solution appears to be to sign up for some dodgy service and pay a
monthly fee for an antivirus product you’ve never heard of before.<br />
In
this case, the best defense is advance preparation. Investing in
antivirus software and pop-up blockers tend to eliminate this issue. To
be safe, you should be sure to regularly back-up your important
documents and programs in case of a worst-case scenario. And if you find
malware pop-up forcing you to download something, don’t do it under any
circumstances. It’s better to perform a hard reset of your device than
to download something that might compromise your device.<br />
<h3>
<strong>3) “OMG! Is this a naked picture of you?”</strong></h3>
No
wonder this con has grown in popularity in recent years. If a scammer’s
goal is to get you to click their link and the best way to do that is
to frighten you, then what’s more worrisome than leaked nudes?<br />
It’s
especially easy to fall for this, especially since this scam often uses
dummy or hacked versions of your friend’s accounts to lure you into
thinking the message is legitimate.<br />
And if you click the link and
enter your log-in information to find the photo on Facebook or Twitter
or Instagram, then the cycle will begin again, and a dummy or hacked
version of your account will then message someone else from your
friends’ list.<br />
If this scenario happens to you, the best way to be
sure is to contact the friend via another method, like text, and ask
them if they sent the email. Chances are they’ve been hacked and didn’t
even realize it.<br />
<h3>
<strong>4) “Can you send by Western Union?”</strong></h3>
Anyone
requesting money in exchange for a later reward shouldn’t be trusted,
but the scam persists because it’s still tricking people.<br />
For
example, maybe you’re trying to sell an old couch on Craigslist or eBay.
You get a message almost immediately, offering exactly what you were
hoping to get. But there’s a snag: the buyer lives overseas. They might
say, “Send me your address and I’ll mail you a check to cover the costs
and shipping.” It’s a bit strange to pay by check, but they have an
excuse and insist on it, usually accompanied by some sob story on why
PayPal or another method is unusable for them right now. Then they’ll
send you a check to deposit for a sum larger than agreed upon. They tell
you the extra money is for their shipping company to cover the
delivery. They’ll ask that you deposit the check and then “can you send
(X amount) by Western Union?”<br />
The con here is that the check is
always a forgery. They’re attempting to earn your confidence that this
is a legitimate transaction, but their only goal is for you to wire them
money through a dummy company. Of course, you wouldn’t know the check
is a forgery until after the bank tells you the check has bounced.<br />
If
this racket sounds familiar, that’s because it’s been around for years.
It’s essentially an update of infamous “Nigerian Prince” email scam, in
which you receive a message informing you that somehow a large windfall
was coming your way thanks to a prince in Nigeria.<br />
But there’s
the thing: At this point, transactions online should be a simple
process. If they can’t deliver with PayPal or Venmo, then no matter what
their excuse is, it’s probably not worth going any further.<br />
<h3>
<strong>5) The perfect job/girlfriend/product</strong></h3>
Scammers
love to exploit hope. The idea that we could stumble upon some
life-changing opportunity any day is exactly what fuels their schemes.<br />
Take
a glance at the classifieds on Craigslist and you’ll find a number of
job postings promising big salaries for easy work-from-home gigs. If you
apply to one of those jobs, the fake employer won’t take long to
request your social security number for tax purposes or your bank
account details to pay you. Then, before you realize the whole thing was
a scam, money has been withdrawn from your account and perhaps your
identity has been stolen too.<br />
Similarly, on Tinder, OkCupid, or
any other popular dating site, you may find yourself matching with
someone stunningly beautiful. Then after a few messages are exchanged,
they insist on moving the chat to some other app, one that requires
creating an account. They tell you it’s quick and easy to sign-up, and
they only do it because they can’t trust people on dating sites— but, in
fact, this is all merely a ploy to nab your personal information.<br />
This
same tactic is used to great success with junk products. Anything that
sounds like it could easily be on a late-night infomercial is always
worth Googling before buying. Usually, if you search “(product name) +

If you've got a smartwatch rocking <a href="http://www.t3.com/news/android-wear-2" target="_blank">Android Wear 2.0</a>
then you don't have to pair it with an Android phone - you can use an
iPhone instead. You won't get quite the same level of functionality,
unfortunately, but it means you're not stuck with one phone platform.<a name='more'></a><br />
This is all part of a wider push by Google (<a href="http://www.t3.com/reviews/apple-watch-series-2-review" target="_blank">and indeed Apple</a>)
to make smartwatches more independent and less reliant on a connected
phone. More functions happening on your wrist device means the make of
your handset isn't so important. Here's how it works.<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
<h3>
Setting up Android Wear</h3>
<span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Provided by Future Publishing Ltd." data-caption="" data-id="60" data-m="{"i":60,"p":56,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":4}"><img alt="" class="loaded" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbF.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"41","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbF.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbF.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbF.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="224" width="400" /></span></span>The setup process is actually very similar whether you're connecting
Android Wear to an Android phone or an iPhone. We're doing the latter
here, so you need <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/android-wear/id986496028?mt=8" target="_blank">the free Android Wear app</a> Google makes for iOS, and of course <a href="http://www.t3.com/news/best-smartwatch" target="_blank">a smartwatch</a> running Android Wear 2.0. If the watch was previously connected to another device, reset it from the Settings menu.<br />
It's
then just a case of following instructions: on the watch, choose your
language, then fire up the app on your iPhone. All being well, you
should see your watch listed, and you can just tap once to set up the
connection (though you might get prompted to switch Bluetooth on your
phone first).<br />
At that point the Android Wear app checks for any
updates that might be available for your smartwatch, and once that's out
of the way, you're asked to link a Google account to your watch - which
is easy enough to do if you already have some Google apps on your
iPhone.<br />
<h3>
Android Wear basics</h3>
<span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Provided by Future Publishing Ltd." data-caption="" data-id="61" data-m="{"i":61,"p":56,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":5}"><img alt="" class="loaded" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbI.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"41","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbI.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbI.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnZbI.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="224" width="400" /></span></span>
With the setup out of the way, you're ready to start enjoying the new
Android-iOS relationship you've just set up. From the main app you can
access watch settings (the current faces and so on), and at first you'll
see a prompt to turn on your feed - this basically gives Google
permission to show you more personalized information on your wrist (such
as flight information pulled from Gmail).<br />
The app also prompts
you to share your location with the Android Wear app, and again the aim
is to provide a more personalised experience, so you can get travel
times to work, recommendations about nearby restaurants, and so on.<br />
The
layout of the app is pretty straightforward. Tap on any watch face to
set it, or on the cog icon at the top to get at more settings, like
whether the always-on display and the tilt-to-wake feature are enabled
or disabled.<br />
<h3>
Functions on your watch</h3>
<span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Provided by Future Publishing Ltd." data-caption="" data-id="62" data-m="{"i":62,"p":56,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":6}"><img alt="" class="loaded" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnXGh.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"41","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnXGh.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnXGh.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnXGh.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="224" width="400" /></span></span>
As we've said, Android Wear 2.0 puts much more functionality on the
watch itself: tap the power button to see your apps (or hold it <a href="http://www.t3.com/news/test-driving-the-new-google-assistant-in-allo" target="_blank">for Google Assistant</a>), swipe down from the watch face to see quick settings, or tap and hold the face to customise it.<br />
Head
to Settings, then Connectivity, then Wi-Fi on the watch to add a
wireless connection (don't worry, you can type in the password on your
iPhone). This then allows you to install apps - in Android Wear 2.0 this
is done from the watch itself, so open up the Play Store app on your
wrist and see what you can find. You can also send Google Play apps to
your watch from the web, to save you tapping out app names on the little
screen.<br />
Android Wear 2.0 supports complications, so you can
change the little information widgets shown on most faces - to do this,
tap and hold on the watch face, then tap the cog icon. Some watch faces
have more options than others - to change the watch face from the
smartwatch itself, swipe right to see a selection.<br />
<h3>
The differences with iOS</h3>
<span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Provided by Future Publishing Ltd." data-caption="" data-id="63" data-m="{"i":63,"p":56,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":7}"><img alt="" class="loaded" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnVkz.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"41","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnVkz.img?h=410&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnVkz.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"35","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBnVkz.img?h=351&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="224" width="400" /></span></span>
Android Wear 2.0 watches work fine with iOS, but there are some
limitations compared to an Android-to-Android connection. While you will
get pings for text messages, for example, you can't reply to them from
your wrist like you can with Android. Phone calls are restricted too -
you can accept or refuse incoming iPhone calls from your wrist, but you
have to actually take the call on your iPhone.<br />
For a lot of
non-Google iOS apps, you have to make do with getting alerts, with very
few actual interactions actually available on Android Wear most of the
time. Music apps are one exception: Apple Music, Spotify, <a href="http://www.t3.com/news/7-essential-tips-to-get-more-out-of-google-play-music" target="_blank">and Google Play Music</a>
can all be controlled from your wrist, so there's some interactivity
there. You can even cache files on your wrist, though that's only
available with Google Play Music.<br />
<br />
Gmail also lets you reply
straight from your smartwatch though, and another tweak you can make is
to show Google Calendar events on your wrist rather than ones from your
Apple Calendar app - open the watch settings in the Android Wear app to
do this. With standalone app support and decent links to iOS, Android
Wear support for iPhones is better than ever: in fact it's getting close
to being as good as it is for Android itself, though we're not there
yet.<br />

Flexible displays are <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2015/02/18/lg-g-flex-2-review/?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000618" target="_blank">nothing new</a>.
However, most of them don't live up to the dreams of flexible tech --
they may only bend in a limited way. Samsung thinks it can do better. It
just <a href="http://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20170522000666&ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000618" target="_blank">unveiled</a>
a 9.1-inch prototype OLED display that's stretchable in seemingly every
way imaginable: you can bend, roll and even dent it (up to half an inch
deep) knowing that it'll revert to its original form. The technology is
still very young, but Samsung believes the stretchy screen will be
useful for everything from wearables to in-car displays. Imagine a very
thin smartwatch that can take some knocks without smashing into pieces.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Samsung" data-caption="Samsung 9.1-inch 'stretchable' OLED with pushing comparison" data-id="61" data-m="{"i":61,"p":57,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":4}"><img alt="Samsung 9.1-inch 'stretchable' OLED with pushing comparison" class="loaded" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"14","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqbHO.img?h=144&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"12","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqbHO.img?h=123&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"12","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqbHO.img?h=123&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="78" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqbHO.img?h=144&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" width="400" /></span><span class="caption truncate"> Samsung 9.1-inch 'stretchable' OLED with pushing comparison
</span></span>
That's not the only trick Samsung has up its sleeve, either. It's
showing off a 1.96-inch 4K LCD whose ridiculously high 2,250 pixels per
inch density would be ideal for virtual reality. You might not notice
the distracting "screen door" effect (where you can see the gaps between
pixels) common to VR headsets. There's again no roadmap, but it's just
as well when even PC-based VR still requires a fairly speedy computer.
It could be a while before enough people have PCs that can handle this
extra-high resolution at the frame rates you need for smooth VR.<br />
<br />
To
top it all off, Samsung is also exhibiting a 5.09-inch OLED with
"glassless" stereoscopic 3D -- yes, it's still kicking around the
concept despite the <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2015/04/28/sky-3d-channel-closing/?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000618" target="_blank">decline of 3D technology</a>.
The use of OLED should offer more natural-looking results than an LCD,
Samsung says. There is the risk of a panel being used for gimmickry
(Samsung talks about games and pop-up books), but it could also add
depth to VR experiences.Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-37452075845064645262017-05-23T09:08:00.001+01:002017-05-23T09:08:10.954+01:00Facebook Safety Check activated after deadly Manchester blast <span class="storyimage fullwidth inlineimage" data-aop="image"><span class="image" data-attrib="Provided by CNET" data-caption="Facebook's Safety Check activated after Manchester, England, explosion." data-id="59" data-m="{"i":59,"p":56,"n":"openModal","t":"articleImages","o":3}"><img alt="Facebook's Safety Check activated after Manchester, England, explosion." class="loaded" data-src="{"default":{"load":"default","w":"73","h":"27","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqvx8.img?h=274&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size3column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"24","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqvx8.img?h=235&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"},"size2column":{"load":"default","w":"62","h":"24","src":"//img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqvx8.img?h=235&w=624&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f"}}" height="150" src="http://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/BBBqvx8.img?h=274&w=728&m=6&q=60&o=f&l=f" width="400" /></span><span class="caption truncate"> Facebook's Safety Check activated after Manchester, England, explosion.

Facebook's Safety Check feature was activated Monday in the wake of
an explosion at a concert in Manchester, England, that killed 19 and
injured about 50 more.<br />
The explosion occurred at the
conclusion of an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena just
before 10:35 p.m. local time. Greater Manchester police said it was
"currently being treated as a terrorist incident until police know
otherwise."<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Many of the victims were young girls, a US law enforcement source who received a preliminary briefing told <a href="http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2017/05/22/manchester-england-explosion/" target="_blank">CBS News</a>. The source said two explosions occurred, both involving nails. <br />
Safety
Check sends a message to Facebook users in areas of immediate danger,
allowing people to notify friends and family that they are alive and
well. It has been used for natural disasters like <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-activates-safety-check-for-hurricane-matthew/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">hurricanes</a>, as well as <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-activates-safety-check-after-orlando-massacre/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">mass shootings</a> and <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-activates-safety-check-after-truck-attack-kills-dozens-in-nice-france/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">terrorist attacks</a>.<br />

The Facebook tool has been activated more than 300 times in the past three years, but it has also been <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/news/facebook-responds-to-backlash-over-safety-check-feature/" target="_blank">criticized</a>
for failing to activate Safety Check in some parts of the world. In
response, the social media giant no longer manually activates the tool,
relying instead on user activity to automatically trigger alerts,
tracking keywords indicating danger like "earthquake," "shooting" or "<a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/facebook-activates-safety-check-for-fake-bangkok-bombing/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">explosion</a>" in concentrated areas.Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-57955633232724175232017-05-23T09:02:00.000+01:002017-05-23T09:02:01.298+01:00Everything points to Apple launching new MacBooks next month<br /><section class="articlebody" data-aop="articlebody" itemprop="articleBody">

will unveil the next big thing for its various software operating
systems at WWDC 2017, including iOS 11 and the next macOS major update.
But the iPhone maker is also tipped to launch a variety of new products
at the show, including the Siri speaker, a 10.5-inch iPad Pro, and new
MacBooks. A new report says that Apple is indeed expected to launch new
laptops this quarter, and there’s reason to be excited.<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
In a new research note to customers, TrendForce said that notebooks
are having a little moment, again. Shipments for the first quarter of
the year grew by 6.1% compared to last year, totaling around 37.81
million. That’s a 15.6% decline from the Christmas quarter, but still an
impressive result for the period.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Apple placed fifth in
TrendForce’s top, with 3.4 million MacBook laptops shipped during the
period — that marks a 15.8% decline compared to the December quarter,
but a 15.4% increase compared to last year.<br />
TrendForce quotes the
MacBook Pro with TouchBar as the device that contributed significantly
to the overall shipments. Similarly, the researchers believe the 12-inch
MacBook will help Apple ship 10% more laptops in the second quarter of
this year than last year.<br />
That’s because Apple reportedly plans to
launch a new version of the 12-inch MacBook that will feature a new
processor. The report notes that promotional pricing for some older
models might also be in order.<br />
A previous report said that Apple
will update the MacBook Pro as well, even if it only launched a new
model in late 2016. TrendForce makes no mention of other MacBook updates
for the quarter.<br />

Theresa May said the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack,
making it the deadliest militant assault in Britain since four British
Muslims killed 52 people in suicide bombings on London's transport
system in July 2005.<br />
Police said the attacker detonated the
explosives shortly after 10:33 pm (2133 GMT) at Manchester Arena, which
has the capacity to hold 21,000 people. Children were among the dead,
police said.<br />
"We believe, at this stage, the attack last night was
conducted by one man," Manchester Chief Constable Ian Hopkins told
reporters. "The priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or
as part of a network.<br />
<br />
"We believe the attacker was carrying an
improvised explosive device which he detonated causing this atrocity,"
said Hopkins, who declined to answer questions about whether the
attacker was British.<br />
A witness who attended the concert said she
felt a huge blast as she was leaving the arena, followed by screaming
and a rush by thousands of people trying to escape the building.<br />
A
video posted on Twitter showed fans, many of them young, screaming and
running from the venue. Dozens of parents frantically searched for their
children, posting photos and pleading for information on social media.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
"We
were making our way out and when we were right by the door there was a
massive explosion and everybody was screaming," concert-goer Catherine
Macfarlane told Reuters.<br />
"It was a huge explosion - you could feel
it in your chest. It was chaotic. Everybody was running and screaming
and just trying to get out."<br />
Ariana Grande, 23, later said on Twitter: "broken. from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry. i don't have words."<br />
May,
who faces an election in two-and-a-half weeks, said her thoughts were
with the victims and their families. She and Jeremy Corbyn, the leader
of the opposition Labour Party, agreed to suspend campaigning ahead of
the June 8 election.<br />
"We are working to establish the full details
of what is being treated by the police as an appalling terrorist
attack," May said in a statement. "All our thoughts are with the victims
and the families of those who have been affected."<br />
May is due to
hold a crisis response meeting and finance minister Philip Hammond will
cut short a trip to Brussels to return to London.<br />
Chinese
President Xi Jinping sent his condolences to Queen Elizabeth while
French President Emmanuel Macron said he would discuss the fight against
terrorism with May.<br />

<strong>SUICIDE BOMBER?</strong><br />
There
was no immediate claim of responsibility, but U.S. officials drew
parallels to the coordinated attacks in November 2015 by Islamist
militants on the Bataclan concert hall and other sites in Paris, which
claimed about 130 lives.<br />
<br />
British police were on alert for any
further attacks. Central London's Victoria coach station and roads
around it were closed after discovery of a suspect package, the BBC
said.<br />
Islamic State supporters took to social media to celebrate the blast and some encouraged similar attacks elsewhere.<br />
Britain is on its second-highest alert level of "severe," meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely.<br />
British
counter-terrorism police have said they are making on average an arrest
every day in connection with suspected terrorism.<br />
In March, a
British-born convert to Islam plowed a car into pedestrians on London's
Westminster Bridge, killing four people before stabbing to death a
police officer who was on the grounds of parliament. The man was shot
dead at the scene.<br />
In 2015, Pakistani student Abid Naseer was
convicted in a U.S. court of conspiring with al Qaeda to blow up the
Arndale shopping center in the center of Manchester in April 2009.<br />
<br />
<strong>PARENTS' ANGUISH</strong><br />
Manchester Arena, the largest indoor arena in Europe, opened in 1995 and is a popular concert and sporting venue.<br />
Desperate
parents and friends used social media to search for loved ones who
attended Monday's concert while the wounded were being treated at six
hospitals across Manchester.<br />
"Everyone pls share this, my little
sister Emma was at the Ari concert tonight in #Manchester and she isn't
answering her phone, pls help me," said one message posted alongside a
picture of a blonde girl with flowers in her hair.<br />
<br />
Paula Robinson,
48, from West Dalton about 40 miles east of Manchester, said she was at
the train station next to the arena with her husband when she felt the
explosion and saw dozens of teenage girls screaming and running away
from arena.<br />
"We ran out," Robinson told Reuters. "It was literally seconds after the explosion. I got the teens to run with me."<br />
Robinson
took dozens of teenage girls to the nearby Holiday Inn Express hotel
and tweeted out her phone number to worried parents, telling them to
meet her there. She said her phone had not stopped ringing since her
tweet.<br />
"Parents were frantic running about trying to get to their
children," she said. "There were lots of lots children at Holiday Inn."<br />

But the one that got us really excited is <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/google-lens-vision-recognition-tells-you-what-youre-looking-at/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">Google Lens</a>.
Lens is not a piece of hardware, but rather a behind-the-scenes piece
of software that can recognize text and objects from a picture or
camera. It analyzes and contextualizes what it sees in real time and
shares that info quickly.<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
It sounds pretty dry on paper (Google uses phrases like "machine
learning," "vision-based computing" and "artificial intelligence" to
describe it), but when it was demoed at the conference, it was actually
pretty neat -- even garnering some "oohs" and "ahhs" from the audience.<br />
Here
are the three ways Google Lens works, as well as a few real-world
scenarios where it may come in handy, and why we're excited about it.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>You can identify objects on the fly</b><br />
With
Google Lens, you can point your phone at an unknown object (say, a
flower), and it will help identify what it is. In the example Google
used, Lens identified a flower species named Milk and Wine Lily.<br />
We're
not too sure how extensive this feature is, but since Google Assistant
can already identify monuments and landmarks from photos, we wouldn't be
surprised if you could point your phone at a building and Google Lens
could identify it as, say, the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Brandenburg Gate
in Berlin.<br />
In addition to flowers, it'd be great if it could identify birds for the amateur ornithologist or cars for the car enthusiast.<br />
<br />
<b>You can sign into Wi-Fi without breaking your back</b><br />
The
biggest audience reaction Lens got at I/O was when it read the name and
password of a Wi-Fi network on a router, then automatically signed and
connected the phone to the network. The idea that Lens can carry out a
multistep task (not to mention solve that familiar first-world problem
of crawling under a desk and taking a picture of someone's
17-character-long password) is exciting and makes us speculate what else
it could do.<br />
Perhaps it can autoconnect to Bluetooth after
you scan an object's product number, or carry out a purchase on Android
Pay after you scan a barcode, or add an event to your Google Calendar
after scanning a flyer.<br />
<br />
<b>You can get the lowdown on nearby places</b><br />
Lens
can also scan the facade of nearby businesses and call up info and
reviews of that particular place. This makes a lot of sense given
Google's expansive database of places, photos and streets. We wouldn't
be surprised if Lens could identify text and signages of other things,
like how Google Translate can already translate different languages of
signs when you point your camera to them. Calling up more info for other
things like wine labels (third-party apps like Vivino and Samsung's AI
Bixby Vision already do this), food packaging and medicine labels.<br />
We
haven't tried Google Lens out for ourselves, but from what we've seen
so far, it's pretty nifty and easy to use, and we're looking forward to
when it rolls out (whenever that will be).<br />

Internet security became a hot topic when a ransomware attack hit more than 300,000 computers worldwide.
</span></span>Avast, the company behind the leading antivirus
software, warned Thursday against attacks on home appliances connected
to the internet, calling hackers targeting home routers a major threat
to consumers.<br />
<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
"It's a trivial thing to do and there's nothing the user can do to
fix it, other than to throw the router away and put in a new router,"
Avast chief executive Vincent Steckler told reporters.<br />
Avast chief
technology officer Ondrej Vlcek said that more and more people were
using internet-enabled appliances which he described as "a total
nightmare when it comes to security".<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Vulnerable appliances
include TV sets, audio systems, coffee machines and toys, according to
the Prague-based company, which every month registers 444 million users
and prevents 3.5 billion malware attacks and 500 million visits to
harmful websites.<br />
In February, London police arrested a Briton
suspected of staging a cyberattack on household routers run by Deutsche
Telekom in November 2016, which knocked an estimated million German
households offline.<br />
<br />
Steckler said his company had hacked into a
router at a recent show in the United States to demonstrate the harm
such attacks can do.<br />
Avast changed the router's firmware, took control of a TV set and made it play a Barack Obama speech over and over.<br />
"Even
if you turn off the TV, the router turns the TV back on and the user
can't see anything other than the Obama speech," Steckler said, adding
that the hacker could then hold the TV for ransom.<br />
"I know most
people, especially Americans, care much more about their TV than they do
about their data. They'd probably be much more willing to pay ransom
for it," he said, chuckling.<br />
Internet security became a hot topic
last Friday when a ransomware attack hit more than 300,000 computers
worldwide, affecting the likes of Britain's National Health Service, US
package delivery giant FedEx and Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail network.</span>

their weekends, the central bank of Bangladesh began firing off dozens
of transfer orders to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, asking to
remove money from its accounts — almost $1 billion.<br />
<div class="ec-module section-layout emsinline floatleft" data-height="231px">
</div>
It was a heist. The robbers hadn't walked in with guns or tunneled
into a vault to get the money. They'd hijacked the bank's computer
systems to access an international financial network, SWIFT, which
shunts around billions of dollars a day. The invisible thieves made off
with $81 million before officials halted the geyser of cash.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
The
attack's audacity, and the weaknesses it exposed, stunned bankers and
financial regulators. Months later, cybersecurity researchers concluded
that it was yet another notch in the belt of one of the most destructive
hacker collectives on the internet, the "Lazarus Group," accused of
previously being behind the devastating 2014 Sony Pictures Entertainment
hack and other attacks — and accused of working for North Korea.<br />
<br />
Now,
the Lazarus Group has been tentatively linked to another audacious
attack for cash, raising the question of whether North Korea has started
sticking up internet users while carrying out its very public standoff
with the United States.<br />
Hundreds of thousands of computers have
been hijacked in the last week by a virus called "WannaCry," which
freezes files on computers and demands a ransom for their release. It's
called ransomware, and it's a new spin on old-fashioned stickups: Pay up
with bitcoin, the digital currency, or lose the files forever.<br />
WannaCry
spread to at least 150 nations over last weekend, including the U.S.,
shutting down hospitals in Britain and hijacking terminal screens at
train stations in Germany, probably causing billions of dollars in
damage. The virus was initially notable because it was an adaptation of a
cybertool to hack Windows that had been developed by, and then stolen
from, the U.S. National Security Agency.<br />
<br />
But as analysts and
investigators began picking apart WannaCry for forensic clues — the
digital equivalent of dusting for prints — a cybersecurity researcher at
Google named Neel Mehta found something in an older version of the
virus. It was just a few lines of code, but it has appeared only in one
other known place: hacking tools created by the Lazarus Group. Word
spread rapidly among researchers.<br />
The connection to the Lazarus
Group so far is only tentative, researchers caution, suggesting that
it's possible the code was inserted as a "false flag" to throw off
investigators. Officials in Europe and the U.S., still in the beginning
stages of their investigations, have not named the Lazarus Group or
North Korea as a suspect.<br />
But "with a group like Lazarus, where we
have a long history," said Eric Chien, a technical director at the
Mountain View, Calif.-based internet security firm Symantec, "I would
suspect that within a couple of weeks we should be able to rule them in
or rule them out."<br />
The hacker group was identified and given a
name in a collaborative investigation published in February 2016 called
"Operation Blockbuster," which was undertaken by several cybersecurity
companies seeking to examine the perpetrators of the 2014 Sony hack.<br />
<br />
Within
the world of cybercrime, the Sony attack was highly unusual. The
hackers struck as the studio was about to release "The Interview," a
Seth Rogen and James Franco comedy whose plot centers on a plan to
assassinate North Korea's leader, Kim Jong Un.<br />
Hackers calling
themselves "Guardians of Peace" launched a multi-pronged assault on
Sony, destroying company files, demanding ransom, publishing
embarrassing emails and salary information online and leaking unreleased
films. The U.S. government blamed North Korea, and the "Guardians of
Peace" disappeared.<br />
Later, the "Operation Blockbuster" coalition
began to examine data from the attack published by the U.S. government.
What it found surprised the coalition: The Sony hack was far from being a
one-off attack.<br />
"We saw things dating back years and years and
years," said Peter LaMontagne, the former CEO of Novetta, the American
firm that led the coalition.<br />
Just as scientists examining DNA look
for a creature's ancestors, the researchers linked code and processes
used by the Sony hackers to a series of earlier attacks.<br />
A 2009
distributed denial-of-service attack on American and South Korean
websites. A 2011 attack that tried to shut down South Korean network
broadcast companies and banks. A 2012 attack on a right-wing South
Korean newspaper. The attackers seemed to be well resourced, clever and
dogged, coming back again and again.<br />
That's how researchers came up with "Lazarus Group," an allusion to the biblical figure who rises from the dead.<br />
<br />
"We
came up with that name because we kept seeing unique chunks of code
appearing/reappearing in new malware strains," former Novetta technical
director Andre Ludwig wrote in an email. He called it "one of the
driving factors that enabled us to identify so many families of malware
and make hard technical links between them all."<br />
The backwaters of
the internet are filled with agitators, spies and fraudsters. The most
high-profile attacks of the last year have apparently involved Russia,
which was accused of hacking Democrats and publishing their emails to
sway the presidential election toward Donald Trump.<br />
But the Lazarus hackers have stood out not for doing one thing, but for doing everything.<br />
"We
tend to see cybergroups falling into categories and staying in their
lanes," LaMontagne said. "You have hacktivists who have sort of a
political agenda, and everything they do is geared to messaging. You
have folks that are very focused on making money. ... Then, thirdly, we
have pure foreign intelligence cyberespionage."<br />
With the Sony
hack, for example, LaMontagne said, Lazarus was "delving into all
three." And the group's ambition seems unbounded.<br />
<br />
"The scale of
Lazarus operations is shocking," the Russia-based cybersecurity firm
Kaspersky Lab said in a report on the Lazarus Group's activities,
likening its production to "a factory of malware." "All this level of
sophistication is something that is not generally found in the
cybercriminal world. It's something that requires strict organization
and control at all stages of the operation."<br />
After the Novetta
report came out in early 2016, the hackers remained busy and trackable.
(The Bangladesh heist took place before the release of the report, but
Lazarus was not linked to the attack until later.)<br />
"Lazarus Group
has been active constantly," said Chien of Symantec. "We constantly see
them, doing little things here and there, but you only hear in the news
the big event that happens."<br />
Industry researchers later linked
Lazarus hackers to the 2016 Bangladesh bank heist and a financial system
attack in Poland in 2017. Top U.S. security officials have dropped
hints that they think North Korea might be behind the financial attacks
in addition to the Sony hack, citing private-sector research work.<br />
"If
that attribution is true ... that means a nation-state is robbing
banks," NSA Deputy Director Richard Ledgett said during an Aspen
Institute panel in March. "That's a big deal, in my opinion."<br />
"Do you believe there are nation-states now robbing banks?" a moderator asked Ledgett.<br />
"I do," Ledgett replied.<br />
<br />
The
WannaCry ransomware would be an unusual development, should North Korea
end up being implicated — an instance of a nation trying to steal money
from foreign users, both governmental and private.<br />
Yet even
though WannaCry is designed to steal money, it's doing a very poor job
of it, raising less than $80,000 worth of bitcoin from a tiny percentage
of the virus's hundreds of thousands of victims. The payments were
arranged to go to easily trackable accounts. Experts initially thought
it was the work of amateurs.<br />
"This piece of ransomware has a lot
of bugs in it, a lot of weird things that other ransomware doesn't have
in it," Chien said. "There's actually no way (for the hackers) to
determine who paid and who didn't pay," meaning that the chances of
getting your files unlocked after paying a ransom "is very, very low."<br />
Others
have speculated that, if WannaCry is the work of North Korea, maybe the
attackers just wanted to test out its disruptive capabilities for
future political attacks — a motive that would not be outside the realm
of possibility for the Lazarus Group.<br />
"There's definitely no ceiling on their ambition," Chien said. "They may come up with an idea and say, 'Let's go do it.'"</span>

ETNews
also claims that the Galaxy Note FE will have a limited run (it
estimates 300,000 units) in South Korea starting late June. Samsung has
confirmed with CNET that the refurbished Note 7 <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-gets-go-ahead-to-sell-refurbished-note-7-devices/#ftag=MSF491fea7" target="_blank">would not be available in the US</a>.<br />

Samsung declined to comment.<br />

shrinking in the format of mixed reality goggles, which at present are
still bulky and tied to a computer due to their image-processing power

Microsoft is pioneering the use of an untethered augmented reality
device called HoloLens, which Kipman is guiding. But that device costs
$3,000 and is still only available to developers. At Build, Cirque du
Soleil executives came on stage to demonstrate how they'll begin using
HoloLens to create virtual stages that eliminate the need for building
costly real stage prototypes.<br />

Microsoft's new handheld motion
controllers are reminiscent of those offered by Facebook-owned Oculus,
featuring various triggers that allow the user to "grab" an item
floating in a virtual world.<br />
One key difference, however, is that
Oculus tracks a user's location — and therefore the position of hands —
through an external sensor. In contrast, Microsoft's new controller
utilizes sensors that are built-in to the headsets, eliminating the need
for such external markers.<br />
"A customer who pairs a Windows Mixed
Reality headset with motion controllers will have a rich and immersive
experience across creativity tools, productivity, games, and
entertainment," Microsoft said in a blog post. "We are keeping our
promise to deliver a new mixed reality experience for everyone at an
affordable price point."<br />
<br />
Buyers of the new Acer/HP gear will be
able to take advantage of some of the programs currently running on
HoloLens, including Holotour, which brings exotic locations such as the
Roman Forum and outer space to virtual life. More use cases for the
products are expected from developers over the coming months, some of
which are likely to be announced at E3, the gaming expo taking place in
Los Angeles June 13-15.<br />
Although mixed reality have proven to be a
huge hit on smartphones — take last summer's Pokemon Go craze — one of
the biggest hurdles for both virtual and augmented reality remains
price, as well as content.Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-53956358760993646132017-05-12T07:30:00.000+01:002017-05-12T07:30:06.892+01:00Verizon outbids AT&T for nationwide “5G” spectrum <br /><section class="articlebody" data-aop="articlebody" itemprop="articleBody">

Verizon has outbid AT&T to buy spectrum-holding company Straight
Path Communications for $3.1 billion after "an unusually intense bidding
war" between the top two wireless carriers in the US, <em>The Wall Street Journal</em><a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/verizon-wins-bidding-war-for-straight-path-communications-sources-say-1494470230?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">reported</a> today.<br />
AT&T <a href="http://about.att.com/story/att_to_acquire_straight_path.html?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">announced</a>
its own $1.6 billion acquisition of the company on April 10, saying
that Straight Path "holds a nationwide portfolio of millimeter-wave
(mmWave) spectrum, including 39GHz and 28GHz licenses," and that this
spectrum will support development of AT&T's 5G wireless network.
Straight Path's 735 licenses in the 39GHz band and 133 licenses in the
28GHz band "cover the entire United States, including all of the top 40
markets," AT&T said last month.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>AT&T initially said that
it expected to close its purchase of Straight Path within 12 months, but
rumors that Verizon would try to outbid AT&T quickly began to
circulate, culminating in the deal reported today. Verizon hasn't
publicly announced its purchase of Straight Path yet. We've contacted
the company and will provide an update if we get one.<br />
Straight
Path, which had only nine employees as of October, "acquired most of its
wireless spectrum more than 15 years ago but was penalized this year by
regulators for failing to build a working network," the <em>Journal</em> wrote.<br />
<br />
<strong>High-frequency networking</strong><br />
4G
LTE is still the dominant cellular technology in the US, making
extensive use of low-band frequencies below 1GHz. The low-band spectrum
is highly desirable because of its usefulness in covering long distances
and penetrating obstacles such as building walls. But there's only so
much low-band spectrum to go around, and carriers and regulators are
turning to higher-frequency bands for new 5G networks that are supposed
to dramatically increase data speeds.<br />
The Federal Communications Commission in October 2015 <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/10/5g-mobile-broadband-may-use-71ghz-spectrum-to-hit-multi-gigabit-speeds?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">proposed</a>
new rules to help carriers use the 28GHz, 39GHz and other
high-frequency bands to deliver multi-gigabit speeds at extremely low
latencies. International 5G standards are being <a href="https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/02/5g-imt-2020-specs?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">finalized this year</a>, and carriers are starting to promise 5G networks, but the transition from 4G to 5G will take a few years.<br />
<br />
Networks
using high frequencies like those owned by Straight Path will have to
be designed differently than ones using low-frequency spectrum. Nokia
has <a href="http://resources.alcatel-lucent.com/asset/200006?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">recommended</a>
increased use of small cells, including some indoors, and "very large
antenna arrays [that] can be used to effectively compensate for the
higher path loss at higher frequency bands."<br />
But 5G standards can
be used in any frequency, both low and high, as T-Mobile USA recently
noted. "T-Mobile expects to deploy 5G in its low-band 600MHz spectrum
quickly across its existing nationwide macro network, in contrast with
the carriers’ millimeter wave spectrum plans, which would require a
number of small cells so massive that providing broad coverage would be
impossible," <a href="https://newsroom.t-mobile.com/news-and-blogs/nationwide-5g.htm?mbid=synd_msntechnology" target="_blank">T-Mobile said</a>.<br />

Since 9/11, airline passengers have had to deal with the full panoply of
security measures: bans on liquids, inspection of laptops at security
gates, taking shoes off, not to mention coping with shrinking legroom
and most recently, passengers getting dragged off planes.<br />
Now, the
Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security are
contemplating a laptop ban that could cause even more tension between
passengers and airlines.<br />
<br />
In March, the US prohibited bringing
laptops and tablet computers (all electronic devices larger than a
mobile phone) into the passenger cabins of US-bound flights originating
from airports in the Middle East, Turkey and Morocco. The Trump
administration cited fears that terrorists might try to hide a bomb in
those devices. Laptops aren’t completely banned. They can still be
carried as checked luggage. Nine international airlines are directly
affected, including Royal Jordanian, Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines,
EgyptAir, Kuwait Airways, Saudia, Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar
Airways.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
Now, the Trump administration is reportedly ready
to extend the US laptop ban to European countries. Some aviation
security experts are scratching their heads.<br />
“If, in fact, this
move is in response to a fear that an explosive could be hidden within
the components of a laptop, how does moving that bomb from the passenger
cabin to the underfloor hold make it any less dangerous?” asks Patrick
Smith who blogs about aviation security at <a href="http://www.askthepilot.com/tsa-laptop-ban/" target="_blank">askthepilot.com</a>.<br />
Smith says the latest proposal to extend the laptop ban is part paranoia and part idiotic.<br />
“After
all, bombs hidden in checked luggage have been blowing up planes for
decades,” says Smith, citing the Pan Am Flight 103, Air India and
Avianca disasters. He says the TSA has been really cagey about this
issue. Simply put, prohibiting laptops from the passenger cabin may be
hazardous. “It’s going to result in thousands of lithium ion batteries
being relegated to the cargo holds aboard hundreds of flights every day,
and these batteries have a terrible track record of starting onboard
fires and resulted in at least one fatal accident,” says Smith.<br />
<br />
A
complete ban on traveling with laptops would get around the fire hazard
problem. But that wouldn’t go over well with business travelers or
families with children who have gotten used to setting up their laptops
on the fold-down trays.<br />
“People are frustrated enough,” says
Smith. “I mean, the air travel experience, is, in a lot of ways, kind of
maxed out as far as the frustration and tedium, and this just adds
another element or frustration to it. Where does it stop?”<br />
Homeland
Security is reportedly set to announce its extended laptop ban on
inbound flights coming from European countries. It begs an obvious
question: Will the ban eventually be imposed on all US-bound flights?<br />
<br />
“All
any terrorist with a laptop bomb would need to do is change his or her
routing,” says Smith. “I mean there are hundreds of daily flights coming
into the US from Asia, Africa, Canada and South America that won't be
affected. Or is this ban going to spread one continent at a time until
every flight is impacted? Though we don't know, it's a strange move all
the way around.”<br />
As for the suggestion that a good book or a paper
notebook and pencil are a reasonable option for air travelers, Smith
isn’t buying it. He’s just not ready to forfeit his laptop.<br />
“I'm
not ready, and I wish I didn't have to. I don't know that there's a
legitimate reason that I or tens of thousands of other passengers should
have to.” In short, it’s all a big hassle. “People are going to have to
go through the rigmarole of checking bags that they don't necessarily
want to check in, and then you don't have your computer with you on the
plane. People watch movies, they watch TV shows on their laptops, they
get work done, and suddenly, now, that's so-to-speak off the table,”
says Smith.<br />

Rumors about the next-generation <a href="https://thenextweb.com/topic/iphone/" target="_blank" title="Read more about iPhone.">iPhone</a> are spreading at such a fast pace that last week CEO Tim Cook <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2017/05/02/iphone-sales-pause-due-to-iphone-8-rumors/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">claimed</a> they’re practically causing sales to drop – and today we have another one.<br />
Despite <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/04/24/apple-iphone-delay-shipping/" target="_blank">conflicting</a><a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/05/03/iphone-8-may-not-arrive-until-next-year/" target="_blank">reports</a>
over the past few weeks, Chinese media Economic Daily News (EDN)
reports the Big A will unveil the new iPhone during its traditional
hardware event in September, with shipping set to start on schedule
later in October.<br />
While earlier this year supply analyses from
Deutsche Bank, UBS and KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo speculated the
upcoming iPhone will likely see a little delay in shipping until
November and perhaps even next year, EDN suggests the Cupertino behemoth
has worked out its scheduling with partners and will deliver the new
handset on time:<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<em>[U]pstream to downstream suppliers in the
iPhone supply chains, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
Company (TSMC), SLP (substrate-like PCB) makers Zhen Ding Technology and
Kinsus Interconnect Technology, and battery supplier Simplo Technology,

report.</em><br />
The publication further notes that all of the
above-mentioned manufacturing partners have successfully improved yield
rates and are expected to begin production in June, with TSMC slated to
deliver parts for the new A11 processors in the second half of July.<br />
Meanwhile, the next-gen iPhone is expected to arrive in <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2016/10/27/iphone-8-first-rumors/" target="_blank">three different sizes</a>, including a <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/04/05/apple-iphone-8-thousand/" target="_blank">premium OLED model</a> that could cost well-above the $1,000 mark.<br />
Among other things, the handset could feature <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/03/07/apple-iphone-face-recognition-camera/" target="_blank">boosted camera capabilities</a> for 3D sensing and facial recognition as well as <a href="https://thenextweb.com/apple/2017/02/10/apple-wireless-charging-iphone-8/" target="_blank">wireless charging</a>.Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-971295554411651228.post-31331142395121336442017-05-11T16:00:00.000+01:002017-05-11T16:00:38.874+01:00JOB VACANCE - Graduate National Program Officer at Chemonics International<header class="entry-header">

even if you have a 360-degree camera. You may have to stop to take
photos every few feet, and then there's the question of getting the
spherical shots from your camera to the internet. Google thinks it can
help. It's working with hardware partners on "Street View ready"
standards that will certify 360-degree cameras based on how easily you
can post shots. Street View mobile ready devices let you post directly
from an app, with no PC required; auto ready cameras, meanwhile, are

VR ready
cameras collect the geometry you need for (what else?) virtual reality
and connected 360-degree shots, while workflow ready cameras come with

cases, uploading is just a matter of recording some footage (even on the

There will be 20 certified cameras arriving in 2017. Logically, not all
of them get the same certifications -- as you can see below, it varies
from brand to brand. You'd want to gravitate toward companies like <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/04/24/yi-halo/?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000618" target="_blank">Yi Technology</a>
for a mobile ready camera, for instance, while you'd want to look at a
company such as Matterport for VR. As for the most recognizable names in

since it gives you a reason to buy one even if you have no interest in
VR. Want to show friends what it was really like on the beach? You now
have an easy solution. Pros creators might particularly appreciate the
auto and workflow certifications. Also, this could have a ripple effect
on Google's other businesses. If you already have a camera for Street

to increase the immersion. This probably won't usher in a 360-degree
revolution, but every little nudge might help with Google's long-term
ambitions.Reuben Babatopehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05119268915128122843noreply@blogger.com0
