Everything you need to know about the Google lawsuit that could derail Uber's future

Anthony Levandowski  Anthony Levandowski The first self-driving car prototypes are already navigating the roads in a few cities. But the real action is about to take place in the courtroom.
Google and Uber, the two giants at the forefront of developing the technology, are vying to own the emerging market and to suck up the profits.
The stakes are high and the fight is already getting personal, with Google accusing one of its star engineers of stealing some of its crown jewels.

Last month, Waymo, the self-driving company owned by Google's parent company Alphabet, sued Uber, claiming that one of its employees stole vital technology shortly before starting his own self-driving company (which Uber later acquired).
Autonomous cars have the potential to upend massive industries ranging from transportation to auto manufacturing. For Google and Uber, the opportunity and the threat posed by a world of self-driving vehicles is huge.

Samsung commits to monthly security updates for unlocked US smartphones

According to a report from ZDNet, Samsung is finally bringing monthly Android security updates to one of its most neglected flagship smartphone variants: unlocked US devices. An e-mail from the company says it has "resolved the challenges" with releasing monthly updates, and it is now "committed" to releasing updates every month for "unlocked Galaxy devices" in the US.

Unlocked devices are usually safe bets as the best models for updates because they are free from carrier interference. This means there is one less stumbling block in the usual "Google ⇒ OEM ⇒ Carrier" software handoff. In Samsung's case though, remember there are two major versions of the Galaxy S7 (and most other Samsung flagships): the "international" version with a Samsung Exynos SoC and the "US" version with a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. For the "international" Exynos version, the conventional wisdom of "unlocked models get updates first" holds true.

This electric luxury car lets you snooze

In this file photo, a side camera is shown on Uber's Ford Fusion self driving car. Autonomous cars don’t come more cozy or crazy than the NIO Eve and EP9, two candy-colored vehicles that want you to believe the automotive future is almost here.
The cars drew steady crowds this weekend here at SXSW Interactive, which once again invited technologists from major automakers and brash startups alike to lay out their roadmaps for the future of mobility.
Tucked inside a low-slung downtown building that the Chinese-funded company had taken over for the festival, Eve presented a vision of mobility that turns the dreaded commute into a dreamy knitting or TV-watching escape.
A few feet away sat the sleek EP9, which had only recently set an autonomous car speed record at the nearby Circuit of the Americas, lapping the Formula One circuit at a driverless top speed of 160 mph.
“Today’s cars are the (Internet equivalent) of the dial-up modem,” says NIO’s U.S. CEO Padmasree Warrior. “The true next generation vehicle will come fully from the digital side.”
Warrior would seem well positioned to help NIO execute on a software-driving-hardware approach. The Indian-born engineer has served as chief technology officer at Cisco and sits on Microsoft’s board.

SolSol's baseball hat can charge your phone using solar power

Solar technology is still far from becoming ordinary, but we're seeing more and more of it make its way to consumer products. And now that includes hats. SolSol, a startup from Los Angeles, made a baseball cap that has a small solar panel built into its brim. You can use it to charge your smartphone, tablet or any other device that needs to be plugged in via USB. It looks kind of odd to have a cable hanging down from your head, but the hat could come in handy if your gadget's battery is running low and there are no other outlets nearby.

Several new iPad models have been spotted being tested in Cupertino and nearby locations, according to mobile marketing firm Fiksu – potentially confirming earlier rumors of a planned iPad refresh arriving this spring. According to reports, a leaked investor note from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicated that Apple is expected to update its 12.9-inch iPad Pro model, as well as introduce a new 10-inch or 10.5-inch model with a narrower bezel along with a budget-friendly 9.7-inch option.

According to Kuo, the two larger models will sport an A10X chip – a version of A10 chip found in the iPhone 7 – while the low-cost device will use the A9 chip found in the iPhone 6S. The A10X will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., and the A9 by Samsung, he also said. Not mentioned in his note is the Apple iPad mini.
